The history of the waving hand gesture
The history of the waving hand motion disappears in the mists of history. Wikipedia states that the gesture was already used in the 18. Century. But such a claim just says that this motion of the hand was described in the 18. Century. But we all feel, that this specific hand movement is much older. But without proof, we can not exactly say how old. But I will deduct, from logic in this essay, that it is likely to have accompanied mankind already in the very early Stone Age.
And in order to logically deduct where and when this signal was used, we must first have to understand its meaning, or better said its potential of what it can signify.
It has become a commonplace knowledge, that scholars believe that the open hand signifies that a person does not carry a weapon. And therefore, presenting both hands open is believed to be a gesture of trying to pacify. But in the waving hand gesture, we only use one hand. And even though, we show the open hand for this movement, the fact that one hand holds no weapon, does not convincingly say, that the other hand also does hold no weapon. So we have to assume, that the absence of weapons is not the original meaning of the waving with only one hand, since it is not suited to carry the message, that somebody is not armed. Therefore, we have to assume that another meaning or intend is behind the waving hand.
The hand that is used to wave is usually open. And the open hand tilted towards the spectator shows the biggest surface of all hand gestures. And with its sheer enlargement, this hand gesture is best visible. And also the waving hand is waved as its name states. And waving also attracts views. So let’s assume that the gesture with its enlargement of the shown hand and with its waving motion does not only attract attention, but actually was originally meant to attract attention. And furthermore, we constitute that the given gesture works as a non-verbal communication over a bit of distance.
So behind the pure attempt to catch another person’s eye, the signal signifies another fact on a meta level. And that is, that the person who uses his hand to communicate, that it wants to be seen, must necessarily understand that his gesture is an attempt at communication. Therefore, every person using this communicative attempt presents itself as a sentient being, as it is necessarily aware of it’s personal communication. And that is an incredibly strong sign in a Stone Age setting. Because we today are aware, that people that look different to us because they are from foreign countries, yet are intelligent people and no wild beast. But in prehistory at some point there even were different animals that are now considered prehumans. And there were a lot of primates also that might have not been up to the communicative skills of those ancient human ancestors. Therefore, if you meet an unknown type of being in the woods the gesture of waving their hand tells you that they are in the same group as you, in the group of the highly intelligent species human and that they are willing to communicate with you. That is such a strong and important communication, that I assume that it was developed in the time when it was the useful tool, that I just described with the meaning of: “We are in the same team, since we understand”.
While yet another thing is also communicated with the waving hand gesture. Since we assumed, that it is set out to draw attention towards the person using it, it sets the person apart from the typical behavior of a predator, which usually wishes to stay hidden. Therefore, the waving hand clearly states: “I do not intend to hide from you”, which signifies openness physically and metaphorically. As it makes the waving person a possible target and would destroy their advantages in a fight, and is therefore a strong signal of shared trust. And also in the context of the highly clever beings that humans are, it metaphorically signifies: “I have nothing to hide”.
From that understanding, the waving hand now appears as a very strong sign of unity among our species. Giving a communication of friendship long before you actually stand face to face with the other person. As it expresses, being related in high understanding, not wishing to hide, and the wish to communicate.
