The unicorn sticker motif in history

Unicorns have fascinated humanity for centuries, capturing our imaginations with their mythical allure. As symbols of purity, grace, and magic, unicorns have become an enduring part of popular culture, sparking a multitude of creative expressions, including the ever-popular unicorn stickers. So in this article, we explore the enchanting world of unicorn stickers and the historical journey of unicorns in human knowledge.

A unicorn has been described in antiquity already. For example, in the famous Indus Valley Culture, people had Unicorn seals. Those seals might have been used to mark the products of a certain brand. So of course those seals were no unicorn stickers as we know them today because the people would have to produce a lot of them. So instead they put a formable substance like clay on something and then pressed it with the unicorn seal in order to on the fly produce the clay sticker each time anew.

And of course in ancient India people did not have acrylic glass, with which they could have produced a unicorn sticker. And the unicorn of this culture was also not like we commonly depict it. Because it rather looked like a cow or bull with one horn. While in ancient Greek people believed, that the unicorn was a real animal. And they thought it would look like a donkey with a horn and live in India. And so Aristotle and Antigonus of Carystus spoke of the “Indian Ass”, which for them was a real donkey like unicorn.

While other authors in Ancient Greece talking about one horned animals seem to described the rhinoceros, which also from its description is an animal with one horn. But some other descriptions about unicorns are so far-fetched, that it is hard to believe, that the described animal existed. As for example, in the writings of Cosmas Indicopleustes, whose name means “Cosmas the India-traveler”. For he traveled the world as a merchant, and in a palace in Ethiopia he saw statues of one horned animals. And he reported about this animal, that if one would attempt to capture it, the animal would jump off a cliff and land on its horn in a way that the shock of the fall is absorbed and the animal can safely escape. Which is hard to believe, but yet the story shows that while in ancient Ethiopia they did not have unicorn stickers they well had unicorn statues.

The medieval ideas about the unicorn

In medieval times of course there was also no unicorn sticker. At that time, the unicorn was still described partly as looking as a donkey or even a goat with a horn, but also now the idea of the animal looking like a horse became more prominent. Now in a book called Physiologus which is probably from the second century AD, there is a symbolic story which uses a unicorn as a symbol of Jesus. And this unicorn is attracted by a virgin woman and then puts his head into her lap and sleeps. Which of course is a symbolic story of how Virgin Mary attracted the holiness or the holy Jesus and then had a child.

And with this symbolic story, two nowadays classic ideas entered the knowledge about unicorns. And those are, that unicorns are attracted by virgin girls and that only virgin girls can catch them. Which is an idea that also later was used in the Harry Potter books when the Teacher says about the unicorns, that they prefer to be touched by women. And with the knowledge of these unicorn facts, Marco Polo seemingly discovered Rhinos on his far travels and said that our knowledge of unicorns was all wrong. And described the “Unicorn” he saw as being ugly and not at all likely to be captured by virgins. And how they prefer to spend their time in the mud.

So Christian imagery had unicorns in the middle ages, while nowadays in Christian texts and images there are no unicorns anymore because Molanus said after the Council of Trent, held between 1545 and 1564, that unicorns are not a proper Christian symbol.

In earlier times, unicorns were depicted on tapestries and not as a unicorn sticker

The medieval people had no unicorn sticker but tapestries to depict things. And on one of those they showed unicorns. So, for example, one of those from the Middle Ages is actually a series of seven carpets on which people hunt a unicorn. And they hunt the unicorn, which is shown on 6 of the 7 tapestries. And on the sixth one they use a maiden to lure it and then seemingly kill it. But on the last one, the seventh tapestry, the unicorn is happy and captured by a pom grenade tree. And it has red stains on it, which scientists declare to be no blood, but rather pom grenade juice, which is a symbol of fertility.
