Thumbs Up Gesture

Well, we see the Thumbs Up Sticker and just see the familiar gesture. But where does this signal come from. What are the historic origins of the hand position before it became a sticker. And when we look at the historical evidence, we find, that we do not know how the Thumbs Up gesture came about. And what we mostly hear is the story of the gesture being used at gladiator shows in ancient Rome. Because we know that the Audience gave a thumb signal to signify if the losing gladiator should be killed or spared. But not only is the problem that even if they had used the gesture that we use today in stickers, we would not yet know where the gesture actually derived in order to be used at that point. But in this case modern science became more and more convinced, that they did not even use the gesture from the sticker in ancient arenas, such as the coliseum. And specifically one professor tells us that the Romans were not using the signal as it is used today. And this scientist is Anthony Corbeill, who believes that much rather the visitors of the gladiator games showed their thumbs, when they wished the gladiator to be killed. While if they wanted to spare the opponent, then they encircled the thumb with the fist, as if the thumb signifies the blade of a knife, which is presented or hidden. And this could make sense if you know that some people do a killing gesture at their own neck using the thumb, seemingly signifying a knife or blade. And since the scientific findings in this regard point us away from what we believed, we have no idea as to where the gesture came from. So we have to look for other findings, which give the raised thumb the meaning of “alright”. Which sure can not be found in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where the Montague servants “bite their thumbs” as a signal of disrespect towards the Capulet servants. As in this case, we can clearly see that their use of the finger has a completely other meaning, then the ones we are looking for. So there are some researchers who come up with an idea of where in history the Thumbs Up could have been used for everything is in order, pointing to English archers. Because specifically for the English long bow, the distance of the bow and the shearing was supposed to be about 7 inches. And because this distance is roughly the length of a hand showing the thumbs up gesture, the theory is that before battle the archers measured if their weapon was set up the right way and then showed the measuring hand saying “everything is alright”.

And then we have yet another theory about how the movement came to signify what it does today, coming from Desmond Morris. As he was able to trace the practice back into the Middle Ages where it was used by merchants signifying that a deal was ok. And so Morris says, that from there the signal was used in a wider context as a general signal for “everything is alright”.

Which sounds in a way plausible, but does not give any explanation of a visual resemblance of anything that would explain the transferring of the meaning. And also there is no connection to any possible use of the hand in a way that it should be formed in the given way.

But it seems that this is as far as we get today when looking at the phenomenon, which gives us reason to suspect, that the gesture is indeed much older, predating then examples we had so far.

While we can trace the first time the Thumbs Up was mentioned in its contemporary meaning in a book. Which seemingly happened in a book by Arthur Guy Empey from 1917. And also we have the first known use of the hand sign in a movie, which is the silent movie from 1927 called The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, where in minute 19 a person shows the sign in order to say, that the money is not fake. Which is actually the meaning of that the object is “good”.

But our sticker is not the only use of this signal in modern times, as also for example the Indian Brand “Thums Up Cola” uses it. Which also has the gesture on the bottles of their drink. While also in India, the position of the hand can be found on rupee coins.

See the cola logo.

See the Rupee.

While nowadays the gesture finds wide use on the internet, where it is used for signaling that a media or comment is appreciated. And this feature became known as a “Like”.

While even though the gesture is used in diving it has a completely other meaning in this context. Because there, it is used for saying that the diver or group of divers plans to go up. And therefor often new divers use the signal wrong because they intend to say that everything is alright. While actually for signifying that the French gourmet gesture is used, which can be used for saying that food is tasty.

Also, the same form of the hand with a completely different meaning can be seen in hitchhiking, where it means that a person wants to ride along with a car.

And yet another meaning the hand position has, when done by a referee in a sports game in connection to jerking the thumb over the shoulder. Because used in this way and context the gesture means, that a player has to leave the field.
